Gorilla Facts...
There are fewer than 250 Cross-River Gorillas (and fewer than 750 Mountain Gorillas) left in the world.
In reality, on September 26th there will probably be more runners dressed as gorillas than there are actual gorillas anywhere on the planet.
Gorillas are highly intelligent. Some gorillas in captivity (such as Koko) have been taught sign language. They are also extremely sociable and peaceful, living in close-communities made up of several families.
They can live for up to 50 years, although females only give birth once every four years, and always to a single infant.
Farming and the continuous slaughter of entire families has decimated the Gorilla population. The remit of the Gorilla Organisation is twofold: to protect the Gorilla and to seek to re-educate the local community, to bring them from poverty and to encourage their active involvement in the gorillas' and their conservation.
